“Agreement” with the USA: A Victory for Iran | New Possibilities and Tasks for the Anti-War Movement

The temporary agreement that the USA was compelled to conclude with Iran — the so-called “Memorandum of Understanding” — represents an important first victory for the Iranian side and one of the clearest defeats of US imperialism.

Although a turbulent and dangerous period lies ahead, it is very likely that this defeat will prove to be of historic significance, with enormous consequences on a world scale: a turning point and landmark in the shift in the balance of forces against US imperialism and the Western imperialists in general.

A final agreement must be concluded within 60 days. Until the overall picture becomes clearer, all of Iran’s terms have been imposed in the current “Memorandum”, including:

  1. The cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.
  2. Respect for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and US abstention from “any intervention in its internal affairs”.
  3. The lifting of the US naval blockade and the withdrawal of US forces from the surrounding areas within 30 days of the final agreement.
  4. Financing for Iran amounting to at least 300 billion dollars. The release and transfer to Iran of its frozen funds and assets, depending on “progress” toward the final agreement.
  5. The abolition of all unilateral US sanctions, both primary and secondary, while, in the meantime, the export of Iranian crude oil and related products/services will be permitted.

On the other hand, Iran’s “concession” was the declaration that it “will never produce nuclear weapons” — a point probably necessary so that Trump can present something resembling a success on the domestic front in the USA. What exactly will happen with the enriched uranium is left to the final agreement.

Clearly, this is a murky and difficult point, on which neither side can easily accept substantial concessions — and one of the issues, or pretexts for the USA, that could reignite the front, within the framework of a fragile agreement and an overall strategic conflict that has not yet been resolved.

It is clear that, first, the current “Memorandum” is the result of the failure of US imperialism and the Zionists of Israel to achieve their objectives against Iran through the war they launched on 28 February. Second, it is also due to the growing problems and divisions inside the USA.

Trump is facing serious rifts and challenges — over the agreement, its impact on the US and world economy, and so on — within the American establishment, the state apparatus and the Republican Party, but also as a result of the resistance of workers, the popular layers and youth. The danger that Trump may lose the November midterm elections in the USA is one of the main reasons why he was compelled to enter into an “agreement” now.

The outcome of the conflict so far is due to a large extent to the preparation and strategic depth shown by the Iranian side — which rest on the endurance, self-sacrifice and courage of the Iranian people, and on the unbending “axis of resistance” in the Middle East.

However much militants of the workers’ and revolutionary movement may not identify politically or ideologically with such forces, or with their means and aims, the consistency with which they have waged the conflict against US imperialism cannot go unnoticed.

Iran did not defend itself passively, but through counter-attacks and attacks — against US bases, the Gulf regimes and Israel — using its “nuclear weapon”: the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as it had every right to do. It never accepted abandoning or distancing itself from its allies, such as Hezbollah, which is fighting heroically in Lebanon against the genocide, the “new Gaza” that the Zionists are trying to impose there.

Although Trump’s disagreements with Netanyahu are largely tactical and the US–Israel relationship cannot be broken in the foreseeable future — given the profound identity of their objectives, and even of Israel’s very existence from Israel’s standpoint — Israel is entering a position fraught with difficulties. The myth of “invulnerable” Zionism has been dealt a heavy blow. Their failure in the war against Iran, and the blow suffered by the USA, make the management of their relationship more difficult.

This contributes to the further delegitimization and isolation of the Zionists, to the worldwide condemnation and outcry over the genocide and massacres they are committing, and over the way they plunder and humiliate countries and peoples, including their “allies”. This can and must be strengthened, multiplied and used in many ways by the world movement.

It is no accident that the temporary agreement was described by the most warmongering circles of the American establishment as a “surrender to Iran”. Descriptions such as a “triumph” for Iran and a “rout” for the USA also contain a considerable element of truth. Nevertheless, caution and vigilance are necessary.

Nothing is more difficult for US imperialism and the Zionists than to “accept” a definitive defeat in a conflict of such great strategic importance — and no one can rule out the war flaring up again. Meanwhile, the danger of interventions, wars and escalations remains constant on many other fronts as well. For example, in Ukraine, where the European imperialists are doing everything they can to push toward the worst scenarios of the war’s expansion; or against Cuba, where its proud people are being strangled by the murderous US embargo, while the USA threatens a new “piratical” intervention.

The developments in the Middle East irreparably expose the bourgeois forces in our country, first and foremost Mitsotakis’ New Democracy. They actively backed the US–Israeli war against Iran — the Souda base, fighter jets and missile systems in Cyprus, Karpathos, Saudi Arabia, and so on.

They have aligned themselves in the most adventurist manner with the worst plans of the USA and Israel: identification with Israel and participation in/support for the genocide of the Palestinians; “axes” with reactionary and bloodstained regimes, with dreams of “encircling” Turkish capitalism… These forces and choices are terribly dangerous for the Greek people and for all the peoples of the region.

The slap suffered by the USA is another urgent signal that we must fight to overthrow them as soon as possible.

These developments also expose and strike at the logic and practice of “equal distances”, which, in the name of an abstract “anti-imperialism” and/or “pacifism”, reject the slogan that Iran must win and refuse to place at the forefront the struggle for the defeat of the USA and Israel. In Europe, the anti-war movement faces serious difficulties, largely because of this ideological tradition and the political collapse of the Left, and of reformist and bourgeois “progressive” forces.

Iran’s success is a serious opportunity for workers, youth and militants to fight to reverse this situation. The proof that the US–Israel monster can be struck and defeated makes the ground more fertile for efforts to build a mass anti-war movement. It must strengthen our confidence and militancy.

In our country, the struggle to get the bases and NATO out, to put at the forefront the question of recognizing an independent Palestinian state, and to break the adventurist, pro-war programme of armaments and alignment with the USA and Israel can and must grow stronger everywhere.
